Curators of Burgundy’s best wine experiences

Burgundy...
Tradition, Values, Authenticity

For over 1000 years, Burgundy wine has been crafted with the knowledge that respecting the “terroir*” is the key to producing some of the best and most reputable wines in the world.
It first started in 1100 AD, when the Cistercian monks started planting vines in Burgundy’s now famous vineyards. The impressive Clos de Vougeot castle stands as a testimony to that period as do many of the iconic vineyards that make up the globally renowned Grand Cru level of wines, including Romanée-Conti, Montrachet & Chambertin to name a few.
The wine once made by the monks has been in the hands of skilled winemakers since 1789, passed on from generation to generation. Burgundy is a complex mosaic of vineyards owned primarily by small family-run wineries, each owning an average of 10 hectares (25 acres) of vineyards. Despite their small size, they can produce several different exceptional wines from just 2 celebrated grape varietals, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Burgundy Uncorked

It’s not a secret that Burgundy is a famous yet complicated wine region.
This tour will explain the basics…what you need to know to enjoy and feel confident about Burgundy wine. We talk about the terroir (what makes the wine…apart from the winemaker!), how they make the wine, how to read a Burgundy wine label and how the wine is classified. Sounds complicated, but in fact it’s very easy. But above all, you get to drink some wonderful Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays when visiting two of our favourite wineries! We also visit the vineyards and historical monuments for a few very useful explanations on the vines themselves and the history behind their evolution over 1000 years, and not forgetting some great photo opportunities. The views are stunning. But the most important thing is… we make it fun, and you enjoy the wines…guaranteed!

Price from 350€ per person – lunch not included*.

Burgundy Prestige

If you want to sample the pinnacle of Burgundy wines, then you must taste the premier or grand crus and (when possible) meet winemakers who make exceptional wines, whatever the classification level. This experience will give you the opportunity to taste and compare premier and grand crus, to meet certain winemakers (avoid weekends!) and discover their skills in winemaking.
Of course, you won’t escape the basics on understanding Burgundy, unless you are a sommelier. This experience includes 2 tastings and a lunch tasting at a winery or a specific bistro (depending on availability) and a special “insider” view of the industry. We cover both the Côte de Nuits (Pinot Noir) and Côte de Beaune (Chardonnay) districts which make up the iconic wine area of Burgundy.

Price from 450€ per person – lunch not included*.

Escargots, Bresse Chicken, Boeuf Bourguignon, Epoisses or Citeaux cheese, gougères or ham cooked in a parsley jelly and don’t forget the famous Dijon mustard! We will take you to either the famous Dijon or Beaune market (see market days). You will be able to enjoy a cheese and wine pairing at the Hess cheese shop and lunch at a specially selected local bistro. Of course, your day wouldn’t be complete without a special wine tasting in a local winery and a mustard tasting (after the wine!) at the Fallot mustard factory – the most authentic mustard producer in Burgundy.

On the southern side of Burgundy, on the way to Lyon, you have Beaujolais, which boasts 10 exceptional “cru Beaujolais” wine villages. Visit the beautiful villages or Saint Amour, Fleurie, Chiroubles etc. Lunch at le Château de Bachelards with the Comtesse de Vaiselles ! Their biodynamic wines are celebrated throughout the wine industry… On the southern tip of Burgundy, you’ll find the Maconnais district with its highly acclaimed Pouilly Fuissé premier cru! THE BURGUNDY WINE EXPERT…as seen by Tom

To make our business successful, it takes time, passion, and devotion (and a good sense of humour) and for our clients it’s all about enjoying the experience. This is where Stephen is at his best. He makes learning about Burgundy wines really enjoyable, and our clients have fun, believe me. He first developed his passion when working in a winery in Provence. He then travelled the world discovering famous wine regions and studying wine tourism, lectured on wine and wine tourism development at various business schools. To add to that he’s a people person with a great sense of humour (probably the most important attribute in his profession!)

Over the last 10 years, he has created an impressive network of “wine industry friends” in Burgundy and has a vast knowledge of Burgundy and its wines. I think he can literally organize anything!

Tom

THE MARKETING EXPERT…as seen by Stephen

Tom is the factor 2.0 of Burgundy Unlimited! An MBA graduate from Rennes School of Business, he covers the “Business development” side of the company and in particular he brings a dynamic and youthful vision to our global strategy and is a smart thinker in terms of marketing & communication.

As with many of the younger generation, Tom is conscious of the need for a sustainable wine industry that is not just about the wines but includes all the actors including tourism and hospitality, which is our speciality.

Concerning wines, he has gained knowledge the hard way, by participating in the harvest for the last 3 years with a biodynamic winemaker friend and is constantly improving his knowledge and tasting abilities.

He has the makings of a great vintage too!
